Data & methodology

Overview

Everything on BasketScope starts from official standard box-score statistics. From those, BasketScope computes per-game and pace-adjusted figures, a small set of advanced metrics, and one independent rating — each labelled so you can tell a recorded number from a derived or estimated one. Season-relative ranks compare only players with a large enough, eligible sample. Nothing here uses lineup, play-by-play, on/off or matchup data.

Source statistics

BasketScope compiles game, player, team and season information from official competition publications and other publicly accessible sources.

Source coverage and detail vary by season. Some fields are unavailable for parts of the historical record, and official source material may occasionally contain omissions, corrections or internal inconsistencies.

Source attribution

EuroLeague competition statistics and related competition information originate from official Euroleague Basketball publications unless another source is identified. BasketScope's aggregation, calculations, ratings, derived metrics, explanations and presentation are independently produced.

Nationality

Player nationality is sourced from the EuroLeague player profile and shown as reported there. It is a reported profile fact — not a legal citizenship, passport status, national-team eligibility or ethnic identity — and it may differ from a player’s birthplace or residence.

Where the profile lists more than one nationality, each is shown. Where a nationality is missing, unrecognised or otherwise unresolved, it is omitted rather than guessed — never inferred from birthplace, club, name or a national-team appearance. A displayed nationality reflects the current validated profile record and does not claim a specific nationality for every historical season.

Each flag is a local image representing the associated country. A validated nationality whose country has no available flag is shown as text only.

BasketScope processing

BasketScope may:

• reconcile player and club identities;
• aggregate game records into season totals;
• preserve transfer seasons as one player-season;
• validate source consistency;
• document missing and partial coverage;
• calculate independent derived metrics.

Metric types

Every metric on BasketScope belongs to one of these categories, and is labelled as such:

Recorded

Taken directly from official box scores (points, rebounds, assists, minutes, made and attempted shots, and so on), aggregated into season totals.

Derived

Computed exactly from recorded totals with no estimation — per-game and per-28 rates, shooting percentages, True Shooting % and effective field-goal %.

Estimated

Approximated from standard box-score inputs where the exact quantity is not recorded — turnover rate, rebound-opportunity rates and defensive event rates. Estimates are marked as such and should not be read as official statistics.

Profile

Describe a player’s style, not whether they are better or worse — three-point attempt rate and free-throw rate. These are shown without a rank.

Ranked performance

Directional metrics that support a defensible season-relative rank among eligible players (see below). Lower-is-better metrics, such as turnover rate, are ranked accordingly.

BasketScope Rating

BasketScope Rating combines official standard box-score production, efficiency, playmaking, ball security, rebounding, defensive production and role.

Results are normalized within each season using both the overall player pool and broad position-family context.

The same standard-data methodology is applied across all supported EuroLeague seasons.

The rating does not use lineup, play-by-play, on/off or matchup data.

BasketScope Rating is an independent analytical measure. It is not an official competition award, player valuation, scouting grade or statement of exact player impact. Its colour bands express score quality only, never a metric category or qualification state.

Eligibility, qualification & ranks

Leaderboard eligibility

A player must reach a minimum games-and-minutes sample for a season to qualify for ranked leaderboards. A limited sample is marked provisional: the rating is still shown, but the season cannot lead a qualified ranking.

Qualification per metric

Ranked metrics add their own minimum-volume rule (for example, a minimum number of attempts before a shooting percentage is ranked), so a small-sample rate is never ranked as if it were stable.

Ties

Ranks use competition ranking: equal values share the same rank, and the next distinct value skips accordingly (1, 1, 3…).

Position ranks

A same-position rank compares a player against a resolved position-family pool for the season. When that pool is too small, the comparison transparently falls back or is shown as unavailable rather than forced.

Missing values

A metric with a missing input is shown as unavailable (an em dash) and excluded from its ranking — never treated as a zero.

Formulas

The core derived and estimated formulas, aggregated from season totals (summed across any transfer stints before dividing), with FGA = 2PA + 3PA:

• True Shooting % = points / (2 × (FGA + 0.44 × FTA)) × 100
• Effective FG % = (FGM + 0.5 × 3PM) / FGA × 100
• 3-point attempt rate = 3PA / FGA × 100 (profile)
• Free-throw rate = FTA / FGA × 100 (profile)
• Turnover % (estimated)= TO / (FGA + 0.44 × FTA + TO) × 100
• Rebound-opportunity and defensive rates (estimated)scale box-score totals by a player’s share of on-court time (team player-minutes ÷ 5); a missing opportunity input leaves the metric unavailable.

The 0.44 free-throw weight is the documented standard-data convention. These estimates use only standard box-score inputs — not collected possession, lineup or play-by-play data.

Corrections

Source data may be corrected or updated over time. BasketScope may update records, calculations and displayed results when credible corrections become available.
